The Book; reading and writing for Friday

The book we will use is James Rachels' Problems of Philosophy (McGraw-Hill, 2005; ISBN 0-07-247423-8). There is a more recently 2nd edition of this book (now co-authored with his philosopher son, Stuart Rachels), but the 1st edition will work just as well for us (although you are perfectly free to get and use the 2nd edition, which I might use as well).

The book is available used online. You should be able to get it rather cheap, although it looks like prices have gone up since yesterday :( . Here are some links to search for one.

In the meantime, I will briefly post the preface and first chapter; a few other introductory chapters -- we will next read the chapter on knowledge -- will be posted within the Google group).

For Friday, please download and read and write an outline, paraphrase or summary of the 1st chapter. This should be 2-3 pages.
